These three join newly engaged lesbian star Arike Ogunbowale.
And that’s not even getting started on the basketball! The 2nd year players will be starting their first season truly playing together after Cardoso was out with injury much of last year. The only one that stuck around is Marina Mabrey, who didn’t get the trade she requested but seems to have found a home alongside rookie Saniya Rivers.
The rookie addition of Hailey Van Lith only makes it more exciting.
- Courtney Vandersloot
- Maddy Westbeld
Los Angeles Sparks
There are only two gay players on this team, but their straight players tell a fun story! The athlete is married to fellow Chicago star Allie Quigley, who retired from basketball (or so it seems) a couple years ago.
They’re incredibly talented from top to bottom. Literally. Next year, The Bahamas Telecommunications Co. decided not to renew her endorsement contract even though her on-court performance in both the United States and internationally had improved across the e board. They’ll almost surely be in the top 3 teams throughout the year, so if you’re looking for a bandwagon to hop on that’s not the bandwagon (**new liberty fans I’m looking at you**) this is the one.
In terms of queer things to know, Chelsea Gray and her wife Tipsea Moorer are absolutely adorable together.
- Kierstan Bell
- Chelsea Gray
- Jewell Loyd

Atlanta Dream
With only two out gay players, it might seem like the dream aren’t that gay, but they are certainly going to be fun to watch.
And by that, I mean Courtney Vandersloot is back and now she has a baby. That’s also true in the WNBA where All-Stars Dewanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas are engaged, former teammates Penny Taylor and Taurasi are married, current teammates Allie Quigley and Courtney Vandersloot have also wed, Natisha Heideman and Jasmine Thomas are coupled up and Breanna Stewart and Marta Xargay have a child together.
We’ve done a pretty exhaustive search on the above list, but it is not 100% representative of the league’s different communities and identities because of the stigma and discrimination that can hang over a player when they come out.
What Percent of WNBA Players Identify As LGBTQ?
If the league’s W25 – the 25 greatest WNBA players of all-time in celebration of the league’s 25th anniversary – are an indication of how many LGBTQ players there are in the league then it’s 40%, but that’s not an accurate number.
Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark were the #1 draft picks in 2024/25 respectively, and now they’ve surrounded themselves by talent that has what it takes to win a championship. That leaves Kahleah Copper as the remaining star. I have a little crush, if you couldn’t tell.
Sami Whitcomb rounds out this team at point guard. They’re paid the most money by the WNBA.
This is what happened with 2021 league MVP Jonquel Jones. Kayla McBride is a great shooter and overall athlete. Here’s a complete list of all out gay players in the league, broken down by team. Brittney Griner left the Mercury in the offseason after Diana Taurasi retired, and now she’s in Atlanta with her wife. We compiled this list because we know that the question of how many gay WNBA players there are and because there’s not a lot of reputable information to be had; it leads to stereotypes being perpetuated and biased opinions are taken as fact.
We’re tall; we’re big.
