He interviewed more than 8,000 men and argued that sexuality existed on a spectrum, saying that it could not be confined to simple categories of homosexual and heterosexual. Section 284 of the Penal Code states "Whoever has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to fourteen years and shall also be liable to fine."
However, underground networks and communities continued to thrive, providing support and solidarity to LGBTQ+ individuals.

The 1960s were a pivotal decade in the history of LGBTQ+ rights. Transgender History. Much of the queer revolution of the 1970s, when the city seemed to come out of the closet en masse, had its roots in the previous, turbulent, potential-filled decade of the 1960s.
