Kitty returns to KISS following winter break with a new outlook, pledging to focus more on her classes and improving her Korean. “Whether that’s Korean dramas or movies. Something I’m very proud of the show and proud of Kitty for is that she’s letting herself have the space to figure that out and to not put pressure on herself and know that she might not get to an easy conclusion.”
Anna said that the cast and crew were keen to make sure that Kitty had the space to discover her sexuality in her own time.
Now, Anna Catchart has opened up about why she's so proud of how Kitty explores her sexuality in XO, Kitty.
At the start of XO, Kitty season 1, Kitty (Anna Cathcart) is convinced that Dae (Minyeong Choi) is her one true love. Their animosity is understandable: Kitty has travelled thousands of miles to attend the Korean Independent School of Seoul (KISS) and to reunite with her longtime, long-distance boyfriend, Dae, only to discover that Yuri and Dae are in a relationship or so she’s led to believe.
Here's what we know about the beloved character and the fate of her love life toward the end of the series.
Is Kitty bisexual? Kitty feigns excitement but, inside, she’s mortified by the thought of having to be around Yuri and her girlfriend for an entire semester. Kitty’s return to KISS wasn’t a foregone conclusion: at the end of last semester, she was expelled for living in the boys’ dorm, a violation of her scholarship’s conduct policy.
The show left fans wondering if Kitty is gay or bi but Anna Cathcart says it’s important Kitty doesn’t label her sexuality.
Discussing Kitty’s journey with her sexuality in a Q&Awith Variety, Anna said: “I was really excited that we were going to be exploring that storyline. At the end of the season, Kitty runs into Yuri at the airport only to discover that she's there to pick up Juliana.
These characters don’t really come to screen that often with Korea as a backdrop, especially with the queer story love line.”
I understand the impulse to compare XO, Kitty to other teen/high school-based shows and find it lacking. When she isn't catching a concert or live-tweeting awards shows, you can likely find her judging DJ sets at parties.
