Now, while I wrote all of his dialogue and produced him, I was only a very small part of the success of Goldust. Goldust comes back and tries to get his job back.
In the mid 90s, with WWE creating several new over-the-top gimmicks, the controversial Goldust was born. The WWE reached out to him and offered him help at their rehab centre. You know things are bad if Goldust is this.
WWE capitalized on this by bringing in a man named John Wayne Bobbitt, who in real life had the same thing done to him by his wife, for a segment with Val. Before it aired, there was a video by Dustin Rhodes advising fans not to watch because it wasn't family friendly.
Goldust then began doing weekly PSA's on Raw, where he would say "he" was coming back.
He's a good sixteen years older than Cody Rhodes, and by their own admission the Rhodes brothers don't have a lot in common.
- Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: As of mid-2014, he's become this to Stardust (his brother).
Even when Dustin went to WCW and TNA, he never tried (or they never let him try) the gimmick again.
- Red Baron:
- "The Bizarre One", "The Prince of Perversion", "The Man With The Golden Power"
- As Dustin Rhodes, he was called "The Natural," "The American Nightmare," or "Lonestar." The latter was used by Matt Striker when speaking about Goldust in WWECW.
- The Rival: Though the history wasn't ever referred to in WWE, Dustin has had a lot of matches against William Regal dating back to the early 90s in WCW.
- Romance on the Set: In-Universe: With Aksana on WWE NXT.
- Shout-Out:
- Goldust regularly quoted or otherwise referenced movies in his promos, starting with the initial pre-debut vignettes.
- His new facepaint as of his late-2013 WWE run is basically a golden Darth Maul.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: In character, and arguably Real Life.
It was the kind of gimmick that's ready-made for the WWE. The company loved the gimmick, but since it was a WCW creation, the gimmick fell by the wayside in favor of The Wild Man.
3 Adorable Adrian Adonis
In the mid-eighties, when Aqua Net and hair bands were running as wild as Hulkamania was, Adrian Adonis changed his style to meet the times.
It was time to kill Goldust. He was cerebral. As Goldust, Dustin could make his own mark with an outrageous gimmick and avoid being constantly compared to his father.
- Made O' Gold: As Goldust, his costume, robes and face paint were designed around this trope, especially when he first debuted; during his first two reigns as IC champion, he even had a gold-colored leather strap for the title belt.
There was just never another character like him, perhaps even in the history of the business. Goldust’s initial run contained a ton of gyrations and innuendo and is the very reason that plenty of fans learned the meaning of androgynous to being with. He is the son of WWE Hall of Famer "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes, the half-brother of WWE superstar and All Elite Wrestling cofounder Cody Rhodes and the ex-husband of former WWE Diva Terri "Marlena" Runnels.
While he didn’t win the competition, he was signed to NXT. He would eventually debut a gimmick inspired by the legendary Prince - The Velveteen Dream; and as far as music goes, it doesn’t get much more androgynous than the Purple One.
6 Exotic Adrian Street
As a precursor to both Goldust and the Glam Rock genre of the late seventies and eighties was Exotic Adrian Street.
Dustin and “Goldust” were gaining so much momentum that he was even invited on the Conan O’Brien Show.
As a writer and producer, this was such a highlight of my career because Conan’s writer/producer actually let me write the entire segment between Conan and Dustin, which was an experience that I will always hold close to me.
Unfortunately, as they say—“All good things must come to an end”.
In writing this character, Goldust was indeed very “DEEP”.
He still acted odd, like on a New Year's show in 1998 when he dressed up as a baby, but the gold-colored Goldust was gone.
On the May 11, 1998 episode of Raw, Goldust was really gone, as a serious Dustin Rhodes came out and burned his Goldust costume in a trashcan on the ramp. TNA weren't doing anything to help him, but thankfully he left the promotion.
He was married to Terri Runnels for a couple of years. Since that point, he has largely been a midcard or comedy act; teaming with the likes of many Divas, R-Truth, his brother, and many more. So without warning—Vince pulled the plug on the character… literally KILLED IT. Man, I felt so bad for Dustin—the time he had put into perfecting this masterpiece—now all for nothing.
So where do you go from here?
Vader's manager was having none of it.
Jim Cornette: No, he's an invalid!
- Facial Markings: In longer matches they would start to rub off or be sweated off.
- Fake-Hair Drama: At W.O.W (Warriors Of Wrestling) The Latin Lover Chachi stole his wig.
- Finishing Move: The Curtain Call/Lone Star State Of Mind (Falling inverted DDT).
He accepted and has thankfully been sober since 2008 and is in much better shape now.
- Depraved Bisexual: Goldust is known to be a near-perfect example of this trope as a heel during the Attitude Era; he would flirt with his male opponents to make them uncomfortable but was a romantic and sexual partner to his valet Marlena. The Human Orchid and his lavish robes and theme music, Pomp And Circumstance influenced a generation of wrestlers, including The Macho Man, who had purchased the rights to the gimmick from Wagner’s wife years later.
