Claybon’s smile is enough to keep us tuned in. Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Martin pursued a career in politics and now lives outside “the gates” with his husband and children.

CBS’s new drama features Congressman Martin Richardson (Brandon Claybon) and his husband, Smitty (out actor Mike Manning), a former political reporter turned stay-at-home dad.

This portrayal adds a significant layer to the show’s focus on the Black experience, going beyond the inclusion seen in past series like “Generations.”

Executive producer Sheila Ducksworth has promised a “fresh, new, different, really glossy, fun and really epic” series.

A new era of daytime television is here, and Memphis has a reason to celebrate. Story arcs for Melrose Place‘s social worker Matt Felding (1992-1997) focused more on gay trauma than joy, but at least we were visibile even if the same-sex kis wasn’t.

The first radio soap opera dates back to Painted Dreams (1930), but it would take until 1949’s These Are My Children for the drama to make it to the small screen.

I didn’t want downtrodden Black people. “Make them sort of run of the mill and center of the road kind of thing.

For the time being, Claybon has his hands full as portraying congressman Martin Richardson. And part of that experience are stories that include the LGBTQ+ community.

“I just wanted to see people that looked like me.

The floodgates opened, and by 1970, there were three major networks and 18 daytime serials. I wanted rich, messy Black people that carry the stories,” Michele Val Jean, who serves as executive producer, head writer and showrunner, told CBS News.

A handful of queer characters have emerged over the years, including lesbian psychiatrist Lynn Carson on All My Children (1983), the short-lived teen gay bestie to one of the main characters on One Life to Live in 1992 (played by none other than Ryan Phillippe), the transgender character of Maya Avant on Bold & Beautiful (2013), the 2014 gay wedding of Will and Sonny on Days of Our Lives, and the emergence of gay villain Leo Stark on the same series.

The project is a collaboration between CBS Studios and NAACP, with some of Hollywood’s best on board to bring a longtime vision to life. After just a few years after relocating permanently to Los Angeles, Brandon has booked over 40 national commercials for leading brands; done numerous roles on networks like CBS, ABC, Showtime and OWN; as well as served as a host and interviewer for BET.com, talking on camera with celebrities such as Gerard Butler, Djimon Hounsou, Kelsey Grammer, Queen Latifah, Samuel L.

Jackson, and Halle Berry.
